Web Browsers FAQ
By Chris De Herrera, Copyright 1999-2003
 Version 1.25  Revised 3/23/2003

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Introduction

The Web Browsers FAQ provides a list of all web browsers and java implementations. You can use your PC which is dialed to the internet and your H/PC, P/PC or Pocket PC connected via the serial port to access the internet if you have a proxy. I have a Proxy FAQ that describes how to do this.

AvantGo

AvantGo is designed to allow users to take web pages with them.  You can select your own web pages or subscribe to existing channels.  It competes with the Microsoft Mobile Channels.  AvantGo requires simultaneous ActiveSync and web connections.  Windows 95 users must install the DUN 1.2b upgrade from the Windows CE Services CD.  Windows 98 users must install a second dialup adapter in the Control Panel - Network.  Also, you can move your AvantGo channels to be stored on CompactFlash.

PocketBrowser

PocketBrowser is a commercial web browser for your Palm-size PC or Handheld PC.  It supports BMP, GIF and JPEG format graphics.

HTML Tags Supported in Pocket Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer for Pocket PC - HTML and Object Model Reference

Changing Reported Web Browser Version - Pocket PC

The Pocket PC reports to websites that it is Monzilla 3.02.  Since version 3.02 has been discontinued on the desktop, some websites including secure websites will not allow you access.  There is a workaround to make Pocket Internet Explorer report that it is Internet Explorer 5.5 from Windows NT.  This is done using RegKing. It does not add any of the features of Internet Explorer 5.5 so there may be items that do not display correctly.  This has been reported to work for both Bank of America and Wells Fargo websites for online banking.

Undocumented ClearType Meta Tag for the Pocket PC

There is an undocumented meta tag to enable ClearType on specific web pages.  The meta tag is:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="CLEARTYPE">

You can use the meta tag on any web page and it will not interfere with the ability for other web browsers which do not support ClearType from displaying the content.  You will notice that the page rendering speed is significantly slower die to the overhead for using ClearType. .I recommend that you limit it's use  to pages that you anticipate your readers spending time reading the content. For more information on what ClearType is, my Comdex 98 coverage includes pictures, a description and links.

Turning on ClearType for all Web Pages

Users can also turn on ClearType for all web pages by using RegKing to enter the appropriate registry entries.  If you choose to do this the web page rendering will be slower.

Debugging Web Pages on the Pocket PC

There is a registry entry you can add to the Pocket PC in order to see html or script errors.  You can use RegKing to turn on or off the appropriate registry setting.

Macromedia Flash

Macromedia now offers a version of Flash for the Pocket PC.  It is an ActiveX control for Pocket Internet Explorer and does not play stand alone Flash files.  Also, you can only display Flash files that have Javascript as the scripting language to launch the control. Macromedia has also created an authoring kit to optimize content for the Pocket PC.  I was surprised to see that there is a Flash development tool for the Pocket PC called Pocket Animator and it's free! Now you can design cool content anywhere! Also, Conduits offers a Flash player called Pocket Spark which plays Flash 3.0 files.  Macromedia offers a showcase of Flash files for the Pocket PC at flashenabled.com/mobile/.  Also there is another sample demo from EDS called Running with the Squirrels.   A great site for Pocket PC Flash developers is PocketPCFlash.net.  It has information on how to create cool flash apps for the Pocket PC.  Also, beware that the Macromedia flash player deletes the flash files after playing.  If you want to keep them on your device, you need to change the attributes to read only!

Embedded Solutions

Jeode - Insignia Solutions

Insignia Solutions is now offering a Java Virtual Machine called Jeode and and Embedded Virtual Machine for Windows CE.  These virtual machines are independently developed Java VMs licensed from Sun Microsystems.

NetFront

A HTML 3.2 compliant browser with some 4.0 features.  Supports frames and is about 300k in size.

Personal Java - Sun Microsystems

Sun has announced and shown publicly Personal Java for Windows CE.    It appears to be a stand alone Virtual Machine and does not appear to integrate into a web browsers.

Proxiweb

Proxiweb offers web browsing for the Palm-size PC.  It does not support secure socket layers (SSL) connection so stock and bank access are limited.

Spyglass DeviceMosaic

DeviceMosaic is a very small (850k) browser for Windows CE that supports HTML, HTTPS and JScript.  This application is designed for 3rd party integration into existing or new Windows CE devices.

STNC Hitchiker for Windows CE

A very small HTML 3.2 compliant browser.  It has been demonstrated on a P/PC with Tegic's T-9 keyboard.

WebGo

WebGo is a free PC based application that clips articles from the web so only take and read what you need and avoid all the ads etc.  The web files are stored in your synchronized files folder for later transfer to your H/PC or P/PC.

Netscape Navigator

Right now Netscape does not provide a version of Navigator for Windows CE.  There is some work on porting Monzilla to Windows CE going on if you are interested in assisting or encouraging.    Please register your interest in a Windows CE version of Navigator below:

It would be an exciting thing to be able to use NETSCAPE on the Mobilon that I use.... It would certainly be better than the 3.0 version of Pocket IE that there is no way to update.

The PocketPC registry hacks do not seem to work for Fleets Home or OfficeLink online banking services.

Does anyone have any idea how they are checking the browser compatibility, or any idea how to get PocketIE to talk to Fleets online services?

Thanks.

I have put some PHP web pages together which uses a "WWW-Authenticate:" header to prompt for a user ID and password. On the desktop version of IE, when I terminate the instance of IE the value of $PHP_AUTH_USER is unset. When I do this on Pocket IE the value appears to be retained and I never get prompted for a user ID or password again. Does anyone have any ideas how I might solve this? (I'm a relative newcomer to web programming by the way, so please excuse me if it appears to be a dumb question). (gerry.frew@sis.securicor.co.uk)

Hello, all. I am trying to get an Intermec 700 mobile computer to work with a web site that requires Jscript (JavaScript). It's fine under the Intermec implementation of Pocket PC 2000 but under their Pocket PC 2002 (shipped with all new units and all the colour screen variants) support for JavaScript is broken. Intermec/Microsoft say this is a known issue that they won't fix. Anyone suggest a suitable alternative browser or a way to address the original issue with IE under Pocket PC 2002? All ideas gratefully received. Thanks for your time. - Edwin Bolton edwinb@modcomp.co.uk

Yes, I would be very interested to see something done in this area especially when so many sites get closed off to Dreamcast browser users that haven't any voice when it comes to upgrades. Verizon has become nothing more than a dial up number as they no longer support our ability to send e-maildue to recent upgrades that didn't encompass anyone with Web Tv orWindows CE (their so called "tech support" cannot identify which protocol the DC runs on ) So like myself, there are many who are left hanging because there are no upgrades available for the deck and many service providers have made themselves very user unfriendly to older systems like these. So I would have to close saying yes to any projects encumbered to keep us online and up- to spec would be very noteworthy.

I have wiondows XP and can only use Netscape browser. My INcredimail automatically shows downloads to Internet Exployer...which won't stay on once it appears on the screen. I have tried to clean it up by trying to get to the "delete cookies" and "deleted temp. files" before it disappears, but it dosen't stay on the screen long enough. (Even my son who is a whiz at fast copmuter mouse games, can't get to all the options before they shut down!!) Help what can I do to keep INternet Exployer on long enought to use it? Hi! I am interested in a CE version of Navigator because I am using RegKing to turn on script error reporting in my Pocket PC so I can run Robert Critchlow, Jr.'s Javascript Clifford Algebra Calculator from elf.org. I have all the files locally but they don't run under PIE from his site or locally. It's a good app for, say, field biologists and surveyors, but every theoretical physicist I know would love one in his pocket. It works with what Robert calls bumpy, pointy, flat, blocky, and round numbers, or something like that. Multivectors. Each Clifford Algebra number has nine aspects: real, x, y, z, xy, xz, yz, and xyz. I guess that's eight. Hm. The x, y, and z are basis vectors. The xy, xz, and yz are basis bivectors: each is an oriented unit area. The xyz is the basis trivector: an oriented unit cube. So you can apples to oranges with this thing, but there are rules for that, and it makes the answers come out meaning something. I'd really like to get this running on my 70 MHz Aero Pocket PC by Valentine's Day. We're flying to Hawaii and I want to show it to the navigator on the plane. Her jaw will drop, I assure you. With a sextant and this calculator, the Appolo 13 astronauts would not have had to frantically transfer numbers from the CM guidance system to that on the LEM. If you're ever lost in space, this is the tool to have.

It is also possible (with some tweaks) to run SUN's Java-based HotJava browser on Windows CE: http://prt.fernuni-hagen.de/~bischoff/wince/Andreas_WINCE_Jornada_stuff.html#hotjava It is a little bit slow (on my Jornada 680), but it has some support for simple Java-applets (as far they are only consist out of one class-file, JAR-archives doesn't work ) Since, HotJava is java-based, it depends on personalJava, and unfortunately it seems the personalJava-download is not available anymore from SUN. If you already have personalJava Hotjava may be an option, especially on newer faster machines. It is not really an alternative to Mozilla but it's free and some applets are working! Have fun Andreas

Since people are still submitting comments, let me add mine! I just bought a Fujitsu PenCentra 130 (MIPS running CE 2.11), and I'd really like a better option (or just another option) for browsing the web. Ok, well, I really just want to be able to login on my employer's web site, so that I can be authenticated to the wireless gateway. At this point, that's all I care about (for now).
