Audible

Audible is a source of audio books, radio programs, historical recordings, and other materials to listen to. There are over 4,000 titles to choose from. They charge a fee to access most of their content.  They also offer a free Audible player for Windows CE H/PCs , P/PCs and Pocket PCs.

FKeyboard

FKeyboard turns your H/PC into a piano. The website is in Japanese but you can see how the app works by looking at the screen shot.  Also, only the SH3 is supported.

ModPlay

Modplay from Jimmy allows you to play Mod files on your Windows CE Companion.  It only supports 4 or 8 channel mods.

MIDIPlay

MIDIPlay allows you to play MIDI files via the serial port to another MIDI device.

MP3

MP3 is a highly compressed audio format generally used for music. XAudio offers a free MP3 player for Windows CE.  UtopiaSoft offers a commercial MP3 player called Hum for Windows CE as well.

PalmPlayer

PalmPlayer by Conduits allows Palm-size PC users to play MP3s in stereo (E-100)  or mono.  Also, it has a playlist and the ability customize the interface as the user prefers.

PlayMidi

PlayMidi offers the ability to use a Roland SCP-55 Sound Canvas PC Card with Windows CE.  It allows you to play MIDI files through the card.

RealAudio

Real Networks now offers RealOne Player for Mobile Devices!  It now supports the Pocket PC only. The comments below were issued before this offering.

The XAUDIO MP3 player is no longer free. Too bad for us CE users... the WinAmp player for Win95/98 is now free but unfortunately NullSoft doesn't have a WinCE version (yet?).

I'm sure I've recently seen some sort of press release saying that RealNetworks was, indeed, working on a RealPlayer [G2] for the WinCE platform. Isn't this true?

I would be very interested in a realaudio player for my Cassiopeia E-100. However, I would obviously need to be able to put the realaudio files on my PPC. My PPC does not have an internet connection - I don't see a reason to have one. My laptop however does. I would like to download the audio files and then listen to them later, at my leisure.

I'm the proud new owner of a (now discontinued) IBM Z50 and would love to see a CE-based version of either RealPlayer or the Windows Media Player. Or both. Sure, MP3 sounds better, but it's an impractical format for most CE-based devices unless one spends a fair amount of money upgrading memory. I hear that Windows has a CE version of Media Player in the pipeline and am crossing my fingers that it'll be compatible with the Z50.

I would love it if they would port RealAudio to Windows CE. It would be useful to get the daily news and stock updates.. I currently use MP3s on my H/PC, which works pretty well. But I really want to use it to stream audio off of the web.. With all of the audio choices we have, I don't need my H/PC for music. I need it for information.

Dear Real Networks: Why even bother taking legal action against Streambox or any other developers which want to convert your widely used format. It seems to me that a more profitable venture would be either to develop a converter yourself or develop a player for the exploding PDA market. You've had more than your market share for the past few years now, either keep up or step aside.

One of the things why I bought my Windows CE is to be able to listen the radio of my country at night.

I don't understand how a company that is supposed to try to make RA an standard does not have a RA player for all the operating systems, including WinCE, psion and Palm.

Apart of that I think that the effort to put the core of your system in such a tiny device can help you to make the program the most small and fast possible.

Hello, I would like to see a port of your real audio software made available to the Windows CE community. Currently we have MS Media-Player 7 and Pocket TV. The quality of the new real audio 8 is fantastic. I use it with my ReaJokebox plus to encode all my CDs. The only problem is that I can't listen to these tracks on my pocketPC because RealAudio is not available on pocketPC's. Real Networks must produce a player for this platform. PocketPC's market share is growing fast and microsoft is using this platform to deploy windows media technologies to the masses. Realnetworks must pay attention to this or it may be late to catch up as wma gets established on pocketpc's.

Real Player for Pocket PCs would be a very effective and essential requirement as the Size does matter here. While most of the current pocket pc's supports only MP3 player which takes around 8times size more than rm files. Expecting very eagerly on the release of real player for Pocket pCs

Real media is superior to any Microsoft codec (save WMV) at lower bandwidth speeds. Since most CE users looking for streaming content (in my peculiar little world) are going to be using 19.2Kbps wireless until Ricochet and 802.11b/g become more prevalent everywhere, Real would be the way to go.

Now we just need the RealPlayer CE!

Not to mention the fact that Real streaming is usually cheaper than Windows Media streaming.

I am looking for a way to play WAV files on my Jornada 548. though it will play some WAV files from Explorer, it will not play all, and it is unclear why. HP says there is a converter that will convert desktop version WAV files into palm/handhelds. Does anyone know where i can find such a converter?

MP3 is there, MPEG-1 is there, DivX is there, where is the real player? Real player would actually give the best performance for low bandwidth device like Pocket PC. Even in limited storage it is possible to store quite a lot of "good enough" quality Real media content.

This is not only real audio, but video as well.

Please make a Real PLayer available on the WIndows CE platform that works vell with .rm .rm. ram feeds from the network. If possible make it so that one can stream a few minutes of content to the hand held device and save it for later listening, would be very good.

Hurray!!!

2.5 years after the first comment was issued on this bulletin board...

CTIA, ORLANDO, Florida, March 18, 2002 — RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK Booth #1083) announced today that the mobile version of the RealOne™ Player, optimized for Pocket PC devices and showcased content from more than thirty content providers, spanning news, entertainment and sports, is available for free download at www.real.com/player/mobile. Additionally, as part of an expansion of the two companies' strategic relationship, Compaq will ship RealOne Player with Compaq iPAQ™ Pocket PC devices.

P.S. Chris, Would it be too much to ask you to share this news with everyone who posted on this board?

For those of us who were excited that RealAudio was finally releasing a client for Windows CE / Pocket PC, what was released has been VERY disappointing. People interested in more info might consult: http://davescompaqipaq.com/forum/showthread.php3?s=&postid=1980&t=6532#post1980 or http://discuss.pocketnow.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8025&highlight=RealOne The basic issue appears to be that RealOne for Pocket PC plays only a subset of the Real Audio formats. Moreover, what it is supposed to play it often will not. To add insult to injury Real's tech support barely seems to be taking this piece of software seriously. In reality what was released should be considered and alpha product... :( The question is will this 'product' be end of lifed (as it should), will it take another 2.5 years for the beta to be made available (as it might), or is RealAudio going to surprise us? (as I hope!) One thing is for sure. Real complains a lot about Microsoft. However, in this case Real is doing a pretty good job at marginalizing itself!
