Well,
I was wondering if other than the RIM
line of PDA's (857,957,5810 etc)if there
have been made any Handheld PC size devices
with at least a 80386 CPU in them capable of
running MSDOS 6 or standard Windows 95 even.
I know about PocketDOS, which leaves a
lot to be desired especially with VGA & 386
code compatibility, but it's not a bad step
forward.
When are these manufactures with all their
technology going to be able to put at least
a standard Pentium 1 MMX chip in a handheld?
AND to be able the have such a Handhekd be
able to support the Standard PC/AT hardware
environment? This does not seem like such an
impossible goal to obtain.
So far, all that I have seen that comes
anywhere close to being what I am looking for
is the new Sony VAIO PCG-U1 with it's cute
little 7 inch color screen. This has been
proclaimed as the World's Smallest Laptop,
but really you could call it the Worlds
biggest HandHeld depending on your point of
view. One thing that isn't so small is it's
$3000 Price tag... OUCH!!!

Any one know of any alternative machines
I may be interested in? Even a small size
Laptop might be suitable for my needs.
I guess that is what I am willing to settle
for I guess. Something with around a 7 to 10
inch screen, preferably color, and at least
a 486DX-50 or P1-133 or so. Weight around
2 or 3 pounds or so.

I've even thought of stripping such a
suitable laptop of Floppy, CD, HD etc in
order to lighten it and/or transfer it to
a custom case or maybe even be able to fit it
into something like a Jornada 680 case and
keyboard combo.

What I am basically after is something
along the lines of 1 to 3 pounds and 3 or 4
inches wide, 6 inches long and 1 inch thick
dimentions roughly.
I have looked and looked and unless I have
missed something, haven't found anything.
For instance, the IBM Workpad Z50 ALMOST
fills the requirements, except they went and
stuck a NEC CPU in the thing. Go figure.
IBM using NEC CPU's? What's wrong with this
Picture? It would have been such a HOT
MACHINE if IBM had just put a Pentium in it.

Thank you for your attention reading this.
I guess we will all have to wait a little
longer still. At least Sony is getting on
the right track.
Any equipment suggestions will be appreciated

Looked into the OQO yet? A Google will turn up any number of 'reviews' and vapourware speculation articles. Of course unless you were one of those at CES last week to try one of 4 demo units, it's unlikely you've seen one. And it's been about 2 years they've been promoting that unit now, with still no release date in the offing... but who knows, it might see the light of day eventually.........

Personally, I'd rather do without the long boot times, heat and battery life issues, and all the other hassles of a PC. So it runs XP, whoohoo. Pocket PC suits some of us better.
