Greetings,

My girlfriend bought an IBM Workpad z50 (both out of the nostalgia factor and the fact that she doesn't really need something powerful like a netbook). Both of us have previously used Pocket PC (I still use a Casio Cassiopeia E-125) so we know how to use it and move around it. The problem is that the seller didn't include the serial cable needed for the z50 to connect to a PC and sync/install programs/use ActiveSync.

Anyone knows where I can get this cable? Google and ebay weren't helpful on this, and I don't know any other forum to talk about HPC or where used spare parts are traded.

Thanks in advance.

According to this site - http://www.hpcfactor.com/reviews/hardware/ibm/workpad-z50/ - that device has a fast IR port. So if your PC has an infrared port you could use that to connect to Activesync. Otherwise, good luck finding the specific cable to match your Z50, I have no theories there.

Hi,
The Workpad you cited is getting pretty old. So you may have to use ActiveSync 3.8 in order to sync with it.

Oh yeah, Activesync 3.8 might well work. It's still available here, along with a few other versions:

Nice to see another Z50 owner. I just got mine, (also without a serial cable), and it seems like there aren't too many of us.

We'll probably have to build our own cables. Do you know how to solder? I'd offer to help but about all I know is how *not* to solder. I'm not looking forward too this project.

The hardest part will not be avoiding cold joints and solder clumps, but finding the connector for the Z50 end. Does anyone know what this connector is called? I can't even google for it if I don't know what it's called.
