Adobe Announces Public Beta Version of Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC

New Product Broadens Reach of Adobe PDF, Further Extends Value of Acrobat 5.0 Software

SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 24, 2001) (Nasdaq: ADBE)Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in Network Publishing, today announced the public beta version of Acrobat® Reader® for Pocket PC, a new software application that further builds on the company’s vision to deliver visually rich content anytime, anywhere, on any device. The product allows mobile professionals and others the freedom to view content in the ubiquitous Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) on devices based on the popular Pocket PC software from Microsoft Corp. A beta version of the product is immediately available for download free of charge from the Adobe.com Web
site at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/ppcbetareg.html .

Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC extends the value of award-winning Adobe® Acrobat 5.0 software and Adobe PDF to a broad range of devices, including  HP Jornada, Compaq iPAQ and Casio CASSIOPEIA Pocket PC personal digital assistants (PDAs). Earlier this year, Adobe brought the power of Adobe PDF to Palm Powered™ devices with the release of Acrobat Reader for Palm OS®, a product that has already surpassed one million downloads.

“Microsoft Pocket PC software continues to set the standard as a mobile platform for corporate environments, and Acrobat Reader and Adobe PDF are important technologies for business communication,” said Andy Haon, director of product planning for the Mobility Division at Microsoft Corp. “We’re pleased Adobe is bringing this widely accepted format to the Pocket
PC platform, and we know Pocket PC users will be enthusiastic about the added utility it provides them.” “Hewlett-Packard Company envisions a world in which mobility radically transforms how business professionals and consumers operate and manage their daily lives,” said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager, HP Jornada organization. “HP Jornada Pocket PC PDAs are helping users realize this vision. By the same token, broadly used business applications like Acrobat Reader and formats like Adobe PDF are crucial to making this vision a reality. HP Jornada customers will be delighted by this development.”

Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC allows users to read, navigate and search Adobe PDF documents, such as product manuals, reference guides and other graphically rich content, in their original format or re-flowed to fit the width of a smaller handheld screen. Adobe PDF files created using Acrobat
5.0, Adobe InDesign® 2.0 and Adobe PageMaker® 7.0 will offer the best reading experience on Pocket PC devices because they are automatically tagged with information on page structure and
organization. This allows for easier and more reliable text re-flow on the handheld device.
The process of transferring an Adobe PDF file to a Pocket PC device is seamless because Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC leverages Microsoft ActiveSync, an application that allows for continuous, automatic desktop-to-device synchronization when a handheld is connected. The user simply places an Adobe PDF file in the target folder on their desktop or laptop computer, and the document is instantly available on the smaller device.

Pricing and Availability
The public beta of Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC is immediately available free of charge at http://www.adobe.com/ products/acrobat/ppcbetareg.html for the HP Jornada 520 and 540, Compaq iPAQ H3630, H3635, H3670 and H3135, and Casio CASSIOPEIA E-125, EM500 and E-115 Pocket PC handhelds.
