Troubleshooting/Tips
With
With the recent release of
Windows Mobile 5.0,
Microsoft has released
ActiveSync 4.0.
ActiveSync 4.0 continues to build on prior version of ActiveSync with some
significant changes for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices including support for
synchronizing Media, support for USB 2.0 devices, Internet Explorer
Favorites synchronization for Smartphone. These updates are only available
for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. Microsoft released
ActiveSync 4.1 to improve the user's experience with networks
(specifically VPNs, firewalls, and parental controls) and Outlook. This
article covers some common issues and solutions for users of ActiveSync 4.x.
I recommend that users of ActiveSync 4.0 upgrade to
ActiveSync 4.1 to see if their problem has been solved with the
upgrade. Also, Microsoft has just released
ActiveSync 4.2. The latest version of ActiveSync is 4.5
which supports through Windows Mobile 6.1. Microsoft also has a
ActiveSync 4.0 USB Connection Troubleshooting Guide which may be helpful
as well.
List of General Issues
- If you are seeing the error 85010014 (a general error) then try
uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook. The error in ActiveSync is actually
from the Outlook APIs. You will need to reconfigure Outlook unless
you backup your settings. To uninstall Outlook click on the Control
Panel -> Add or remove Programs -> Office 2003 and chose to modify the
installation by adding or removing components. Uncheck Outlook and updated
it to remove Outlook from Office 2003. Then click on Office 2003 again and
re-check the option to install Outlook to add it back to Office 2003. You
may need your Office 2003 CD. Then reboot.
- If you are seeing the error 85010014 (a general error) and are using
Exchange 2003 and folder redirection with Outlook, you may have to turn
folder redirection off to sync or upgrade to
ActiveSync 4.2.
- If you are seeing the error 85010014 and you are using Outlook in
off-line mode with Exchange, you must be online with Exchange to sync.
- If you are seeing the error 85010014 and you have Outlook script
blocking setup with your antivirus or anti-spyware program enabled you
must configure your antivirus or anti-spyware program to allow ActiveSync
to send scripts to Outlook.
- If you are using an unregistered or illegal copy of Outlook you may
see the 85010014 error.
- Check to make sure that you have write access to the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync where the [username] is your user name used to
login to Windows.
