Do I install WFW over >WFP? or vice versa? What's the order of installation? > >Thanks, >Chris De Herrera > Hi PDCChrisD..the DTR-1 I have came with DOS 6.0, then Windows installed, then Windows for Pen Extensions 1.0 installed, then a special batch file was run to install updated/patched drivers... in that order. I applied the DOS 6.22 upgrade to DOS, and then converted the Doublespace (DOS 6.0) compressed drive to a Drivespace (DOS 6.22) Drive. (I felt the compression might be more stable for OLE, and wanted the benefit of the DISKSCAN command that comes with 6.22). My original unit had drive controller problem. (It was cheerfully exchanged by Lucy Yong at Dauphin when it was discovered, by the way). Anyway, the system kept crashing, damaging DOS, or the compressed volume the first week I had it...so I got real familiar with installing the system software (over and over and...) To build the DTR-1 software environment: 1. Install DOS 6.0 (Disks & Manuals came with my DTR-1) 2. Install the DOS 6.22 upgrade. then run the 'delolddos' command to free up disk space of the old DOS. 3. Install Windows 3.1 4. Install the Windows for Pen Extensions... Run INSTALL.EXE, then INSTALL.BAT. To do this, put Disk 1 of 3 into your floppy drive and run the program INSTALL.EXE, either from the Windows Program Manager FILE Menu, or from the File Manager. This is the Windows Setup program to install the dll's, drivers, and other files necessary for the pen extensions. Once that is complete, put the Pen Extensions Disk 3 of 3 into your drive, and, from the DOS prompt, run INSTALL.BAT. DON'T FORGET THIS STEP!!! ( It's not documented anywhere that I know of...) It does stuff INSTALL.EXE leaves out, or replaces files it installs with newer, debugged versions... 5. Install the Windows for Workgroups over Windows for Pen. This is the basic install - don't install the network software yet. This way you can check and make sure that the Windows for Pen still works correctly. 6. Setup Network Adapter... Go to the Network apps group and go about the procedure of getting WFW to recognise the ethernet adapter....Come to think of it, You'll probably have to go to the DAUPHIN group first, and run the LANON.COM command that's in the \Dauphin directory (along with LANOFF.COM, and the other Dauphin utils). 7. Check the network connection and Windows for Pen and the installation is complete! -----------------Windows for Pen Install.BAT--------------------------- ren c:\windows\system\vgap.drv c:\windows\system\vgap.16 ren c:\windows\system\vga.3gr c:\windows\system\vga.16 copy a:\vgap.drv c:\windows\system copy a:\vga.3gr c:\windows\system copy a:\vdd43.386 c:\windows\system copy a:\system.ini c:\windows copy a:\penwin.ini c:\windows -----------------endofinstall.bat------------------------------------- Note that install.bat renames your windows vga drivers and replaces them with a special, pen version. Note also the system.ini replacement and penwin.ini replacement. Also....the windows setup program INSTALL.EXE actually replaces the WIN command file WIN.COM with a special Pen version...so be sure You have the existing installation properly backed-up, eg., ini's, grp's, dll's, etc, and especially win.com...proper precautions, stepwise incremental debugging/configuration procedures, etc, etc,.. DO NOT USE INSTALL.EXE AFTER UPGRADING TO WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS! The system.ini is not the same! Once that's done and You have verified that the pen stuff works ok by using the pen in a variety of apps, eg WORD 2.0, Notebook, PenEzra, Powerpoint, Excel... That's pretty much the long and the short of it I suppose...I won't think of any nontrivial point to add to this until the instant I post it, I guess, if I run true to form...Anyway, I hope this helps, and please, let me know how You make out... .....dcm (Vead@q.continuum.net)
